The idea of having my own website grew when I was looking for alternative employment.  As I was assembling it, I realised that there was more to say about my life and experiences in industry than just a CV.

There are nearly fifty years of recollections in these pages.  Some of the places I have worked in are gone now, victims of the economy or accountants to whom nothing matters except the bottom line.

I thought it might be interesting (at least to myself) to produce some kind of record of the places I have worked in—and the characters who shared my experiences.

But a web site full of my thoughts and reminiscences would be a dull thing indeed so I have added some topics which I hope may have a wider appeal.

A true engineer and one of my heroes

A modern car engine.

A masterpiece of engineering which so many take for granted

Mike Sweeney

Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopaedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organised forcing of technological change... Engineers operate at the interface between science and society...
